Human Papilloma
Virus (HPV)

It seems you can't have the television on or open a
magazine these days without hearing or seeing something
about HPV prevention. HPV stands for the Human
Pappiloma Virus and it may be hard to believe but there
are more than 100 different strains! Of these strains
there are approximately 6-8 which are considered "high
risk" for developing either cervical cancer or genital warts.
Two of the high risk strains account for more than 70% of
all cervical cancer.

		Choosing to have unprotectied sexual contact
		Having sex with multiple partners in your lifetime (more than 2)

HPV PREVENTION

		Remain abstinent until you are in a long-term committed relationship
		Screen your sex partner and make smart choices. Remember they

bring those viruses into the intimate encounter with you!

If a partner tells you they've been tested for STDs be sure to ask if

they've had any sexual activity with another person since that time!

		Remember that there is NO WAY *to test for* *HPV in males!*
		Take advantage of the opportunity to reduce your risk of exposure by

getting vaccinated!

HPV VACCINE

Females between 9 and 26 are candidates to receive the HPV

Preventative Vaccine. Currently there is one available called GARDISIL

		Gardisil is a series of 3 injections that are given over a period of 6 months
		Ideally it is best to receive the series of vaccinations prior to becoming

sexually active

There is NO evidence that receiving the HPV vaccine contributes to

young females becoming sexually active

COST OF THE HPV VACCINE

Females under the age of 19 in Wisconsin are eligible to receive Gardisil

through the Vaccines for Children Program at their local Department of
Public Health

Gardisil is covered by Medical Assistance/ BadgerCare but NOT by the

Family Planning Waiver.

		Typical costs at local clinics are $300/ Gardisil vaccine
		Costs at the Wellness Center are *much more affordable* and *we may be*

able to help you receive the vaccine itself for no charge!
